Frequently asked questions

Does PhotoCargo change my Photos library?

No. PhotoCargo only reads from Photos and never changes or deletes anything in your library. Copies are written to the folder you choose.

Which drives can I use?

Any folder on a drive formatted as APFS, which is how most drives set up on a Mac are formatted. Mac OS Extended, exFAT and network drives aren’t supported. To check a drive’s format, select it in the Finder and choose File > Get Info. You can erase a drive as APFS in Disk Utility, but erasing deletes everything on it, so copy its contents elsewhere first.

My photos are stored in iCloud. Does that work?

Yes. With Optimize Mac Storage, Photos downloads each original for PhotoCargo as it’s needed, and PhotoCargo writes it straight to your drive. Make sure “Download originals from iCloud if needed” is on in PhotoCargo’s settings. Copying pauses if your Mac runs low on space, and continues by itself when there’s room.

What can I do with the free version?

Everything, with one limit: each transfer copies up to 10 items, so you can try PhotoCargo with your own photos. Verifying, repairing and recovery backups are never limited. Unlimited removes the limit, and a transfer that stopped at the limit continues where it left off.

How do I restore my purchase on another Mac?

Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account, choose PhotoCargo > Settings, and click Restore Purchases in the Unlimited section.

A transfer stopped. How do I continue?

Select the transfer in History and click Resume. It continues at the first unfinished item, and files already copied aren’t copied again.

Some items couldn’t be copied.

Open the transfer and look under Needs Attention, where each item shows its reason. Retry Unfinished tries failed files again, and More > Repair… makes new copies of files that are missing or changed on the drive.

How can I check my copies later?

Select the transfer in History, then choose More > Verify Files. PhotoCargo reads every file back from the drive and compares it with the checksum recorded when it was copied.

I moved or renamed my drive or folder.

Select the transfer in History and choose More > Reconnect Folder…, then select the folder you saved the transfer to: the one that contains its PhotoCargo folder.

How do I keep my transfer records safe?

Select the transfer in History, choose More > Save Recovery Backup… and keep the backup away from the drive with your copies. If this Mac’s transfer records are ever lost, restore them with File > Restore from Backup… and reconnect each folder.

PhotoCargo can’t see my library.

Allow access in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos. If your Mac is managed by an organization, ask your administrator.

What do I need?

A Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel processor, macOS Tahoe 26 or later, and a drive formatted as APFS.
